What is Net Zero (in 30 seconds)

Diagram showing emissions reducing by 80% and the remainder being offset to reach net zero

The activities of every organisation (and individual) emits Carbon Dioxide and other Green House Gasses. The aim of Net Zero is to significantly reduce these emissions, ideally by at least 80%, and then offset any remaining unavoidable emissions to reach ‘Net Zero’ emissions.

This is different to Carbon Neutral – which enables you to just buy carbon offsets without making any changes to your behaviour or reducing your emissions. Offsetting can be a useful tool but should be a considered as a last line of defence or interim measure, not the solution. We can’t buy our way out of the Climate Emergency and we’ll need to make radical changes in how we do ‘business as usual’ if we want to create a sustainable and fair future for all.
