Crossways Guesthouse – Climate Action in Hospitality

front entrance steps and door of a hotel

At Crossways, we are working to reduce and mitigate our impact on the environment. We are trying to do this in the most effective and efficient ways without impacting adversely on the guest experience. There are two main strands of activity we want to highlight:

Go Positive

We are working with Go Positive, a local consultancy, to reduce our carbon footprint, meaning we are committed to calculating and reducing our impact on climate change year on year. This involves a rigorous assessment process leading to the development of an action plan aimed at identifying key areas where we can make improvements. You can watch us talking with Eoin McQuone of Go Positive about our work

Our initial assessments are based on 2019, the last full calendar year of trading. We hope that the steps we’ve already taken will help us move quickly to the next stage of being carbon neutral.

Working with Go Positive has allowed us to focus more effectively, adapting and improving some things we were already doing. These include reducing packaging as much as possible, sourcing locally and reducing food waste. There are more details on our Go Positive page.

Our key areas to work on this year are:

  • Energy – we have already replaced all ceiling light bulbs in the building with LED fittings. We are investigating improving insulation and lagging in the building. However, because Crossways is a Grade II listed building, there are restrictions on what we can do. We cannot install a heat pump, for example. We will be looking at switching to a green energy supplier in the coming year.
  • Food – we are actively working to reduce our food waste. In this (and in this only!) Covid has helped. Our previous practice of offering guests a buffet has had to be abandoned. We now ask guests to complete a menu form by the previous evening, so we know exactly what we need to supply and cook. We have also switched from supplying some cereals in individual packets to dispensing them in jars, reducing packaging waste.
  • Monitoring – a key element of any plan is to monitor what you are doing in order to be able to change it. We keep detailed records covering our monthly energy use, food waste, and meat consumption.

Working to Revitalise and Transform Forests Globally

Crossways is proud to be partnering with Ecologi and Eden Reforestation Projects to help us plant our forest through our monthly donation and our ‘buy direct and plant a tree’ scheme.
We’re planting trees around the world and here in Gloucestershire. You can check out our statistics on the Ecologi web site and see where our trees have been planted so far. You can even make your own secure donation if you like.

How It Works

Book directly with us, either through our web site or by calling or e-mailing us. When you check out we will make a donation to help plant a clump of 40 trees. The donation is worth £6.00.

We can label the donation with your name or message if you like up to a maximum of 30 characters.
The offer only includes first-time bookings for a minimum of two days made directly with us. Please mention Ecologi if booking by e-mail or over the phone. If you are booking directly online, please mention Ecologi in your requirements.

About Ecologi

Ecologi is a platform for real climate action. We facilitate the funding of carbon offset projects and tree planting around the world. Our mission is to remove 50% of global CO2 emissions by 2040 and responsibly plant billions of trees every year. To do this we call on individuals and businesses to take personal responsibility and help tackle the biggest threat of our generation. Collectively, with a little input from a lot of people, we have the power to secure our future.
