is an initiative from Cheltenham Borough Council to drive local businesses, community groups, and charities to achieve net zero

About

What is net zero

Question mark

The science shows clearly that to avert the worst impacts of climate change and preserve a livable planet, global temperature increase needs to be limited to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Why

Why is net zero carbon important for me?

Decarbonising is a revenue generator; the essence of decarbonisation is using less energy which in turn will reduce your overheads. Business, especially larger businesses are adding carbon reduction clauses into the tendering process, customers and clients are increasingly looking for more sustainable products and services, so if you don’t get on the net zero carbon journey you are risking the future of your business; both supplying to clients and selling to customers.

How

What does net zero mean for my business?

Measuring the impact of your businesses Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is calculated using the GHG Protocol.

The emissions from a business are separated into 3 ‘Scopes’

Scope 1

The emissions from owned or operated assets (for example, CO2 emissions from the tailpipes of a company’s fleet of vehicles and/or burning gas in boilers for heating offices)

Scope 2

The emissions from purchased energy, generally electricity

Scope 3

The emissions from everything else (suppliers, distributors, product use, etc.)

Action

Don’t worry! It’s not scary

We only need to focus on Scopes 1 and 2 for now. These are your direct emissions so you have total control over them.
